You can make a difference in the life of a girl...
“You educate a boy, and you’re educating an individual, you educate a girl, and you’re educating an entire village.”
~African proverb as quoted by Greg Mortenson, author, Three Cups of Tea
Girls Support
The Golden Ridge School itself has been a success in terms of raising the level of education in the area. However, attendance of girls remains particularly low and as a result they stay illiterate. The main reason girls do not attend school is poverty and pressures upon them to help the family with work in the field, or to take care of younger siblings, fetching water and stay home while the parents are farming in the fields. Also sometimes they become the head of the household at an early age as they’ve lost their parents to AIDS. The Girls Be Ambitious program provides an incentive for girls and their families to enable them to attend school by providing financial assistance. Presently 5 girls are receiving financial assistance and many more need it.
Educating GirlsThe education of girls in particular not only has a highly positive effect on the individual girl and their families, but it has widespread societal benefits as well. For example:
- Educated girls are empowered to have a greater voice in family and community affairs as well as in their country’s democratic process.
- Educated girls are more likely to marry and have children at a later age, thereby reducing her risk of developing infection and dying during childbirth.
- Educated mothers are more likely to have fewer and healthier children, reducing child mortality rates.
- Educated women’s children are more likely to be immunized against deadly but preventable childhood diseases, and are more likely to attend school themselves.
- Educated girls are more likely to actively participate in the work force and increase family incomes – for each additional year a girl is in school, her wages as an adult rise by approximately 15 per cent.
